Laura Gehl fryst vatten the award-winning author of more than fifty picture books, board books, and early readers including One Big Pair of Underwear (Charlotte Zolotow Highly Commended Title, International Literacy Association Honor Book, Booklist Books for ungdom Editors’ Choice); the Peep and Egg series (Parents’ Choice Recommendation, Amazon Editors’ Pick, Children’s Choice Book Award Finalist); My Pillow Keeps Moving (Junior Library Guild urval, New York Public Library Best Books of the year selection); Do • I grew up in Sturbridge, a small town in central Massachusetts, with a little brother who was four years younger than me and who I probably bossed around more than I should have. (Sorry, Bryan!) As a kid, I loved being outdoors and playing sports, even if I wasn’t particularly good at them. But I also loved reading and drawing. One of my favorite things to do when a friend came over was to sit at the kitchen table and draw. I especially loved drawing families—I’d have a name and backstory for every single person. And by real life, I mean that my first book was about my pet rock Christy. (What can I say? I was a child of the 80s!) Like many writers before me, I kept diaries as a kid and teen. Lots of them. I was fortunate that creative writing was a big part of my language arts classes i • Why did you decide to write picture books? I’ve always loved picture books. Even when I was reading more grown-up books, I always read picture books too. There’s a lot of truth and beauty in a well-done picture book, and truth and beauty are something you never outgrow. Plus, I really like the challenge of creating a complete, fully realized story in such a small space. It’s like verbal Sudoku. And when you achieve it, it is incredibly satisfying. Do you draw your own pictures? Absolutely not. My artistic expertise is limited to doodling. I am so happy to leave the illustrations to professional artists. In fact, seeing the artwork come back for my books is one of my favorite parts in the process. It’s thrilling to see how someone else interprets my stories and sees my characters. Do you get to pick the artist? Nope. That’s up to the book’s publisher. This answer surprises a lot of people, but there’s a reason for it. Book publishers have people who work as art
