In Room 46 at the National galleri, London, two paintings currently hang side by side for the first time: Pablo Picasso’s Woman with Book (1932) and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ Madame Moitessier (1856). The two masterpieces are exhibited in a small room, a few feet apart. Picasso based his composition on Ingres’ portrait of Marie-Clotilde-Inès Moitessier, the wife of a rik banker. Looking at these images tillsammans, we are encouraged to see the similarities: in their composition, the “finger” pose and their use of mirrors.  

But their differences are even more apparent. Picasso’s brightly-coloured portrait abstracts the scene into its most essential elements: the details in Ingres’ textiles are replaced with blue planes, contrasting rather than complementing the red chair behind. This quote by Pablo Picasso was a favorite of Steve Jobs who said he “stole” the concept of the Macintosh computer from a similar device that was shown to him at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center.

Many a creative genius have made similar statements (see below) about “stealing” ideas including Newton, Albert Einstein, Hemingway, T.S. Eliot, and others.

As you can see in the the following two examples from Picasso, stealing really means taking something as a starting point, then using your creativity to transform it and synthesize it into something new.

“Great artists copy, geniuses steal” – P. Picasso

In the art world, there are those who succeed and become recognized for their incredible originality, and those who, on the contrary, reach the top by plagiarizing and copying.

It is well known that in the art world there are both artists who are not really authors but rather proponents of works, as well as artists who only plagiarize others.

It is for this reason that Olga Guarch has decided to dedicate this article to those “artists” who simply sign works, doing justice to Pablo Picasso‘s famous phrase that gives the title to this document.
