Abu al-Fida Isma'il ibn Umar ibn Kathir al-Dimashqi (Arabic: أبو الفداء إسماعيل بن عمر بن كثير الدمشقي, romanized:Abū al-Fidā’ Ismā‘īl ibn ‘Umar ibn Kathīr al-Dimashqī; c.–), known simply as Ibn Kathir, was an Arab Islamic exegete, historian and scholar. An expert on tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), tarikh (history) and fiqh (jurisprudence), he is considered a leading authority on Sunni Islam.
Born in Bostra, Mamluk Sultanate, Ibn Kathir's teachers include al-Dhahabi and Ibn Taymiyya. He wrote several books, including a fourteen-volume universal history titled al-Bidaya wa'l-Nihaya (Arabic: البداية والنهاية).[12][13]

His respected name is Abu al-Fida, ‘Imad ad-Din Isma’il bin ‘Umar bin Kathir al-Qurashi al-Busrawi – Busraian (Busra) in origin, Dimashqi (Damascus) in training, learning, and residence.
Ibn Kathir was born in the city of Busra in AH. His father was the deliverer of the Friday Khutba in his by and he died when ibn Kathir was only four years old. Ibn Kathir’s brother, Shaykh Abdul-Wahhab raised him and taught him until he moved to Damascus in AH at the age of five.

Ibn Kathir full name is Abu Al-Fidaa ibn Abi Hafs Shihabuddin Omar ibn Kathir. He was born in the year AH in the city of Busra (بصرى). He moved to Damascus (دمشق) in the year AH. Ibn Kathir learned Fiqh from Burhaan Ud-Deen Ibrahim ibn Abdul-Rahman, learned Hadith from Isa ibn Mut’im.
In Ad-Durar Al-Kaminah (الدرر الكامنة), Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar AlAsqalani said, Ibn Kathir worked on the subject of the Hadith in the texts (متون) and chains of narrators (رجال). He had a good memory, his books became popular during his lifetime, and people benefited from them after his death.
