Etymology of Mallat
What does the name Mallat mean?
The name Mallat reached England in the great wave of migration following the Norman Conquest of 1066. It is based on the given name Malle, which is an Old English diminutive of Mary. The name Mary was originally, a Hebrewpersonal name meaning wished for child. The name Mallat is also derived from the given name Malo, a popular form of the name of Saint Maclovius, the 6th century Welsh monk who gave his name to the church of Saint Maclou in Rouen. Personal names derived from the names of saints, apostles, biblical figures, and missionaries are widespread in most European countries. In the Middle Ages, they became increasingly popular because people believed that the souls of the deceased continued to be involved in this world. They named their children after saints in the hope that the child would be blessed or protected by the saint.
