Erin Hanson
Often referred to as an Impressionist, Erin Hanson designates the nature as her greater influence. Inspired by van Gogh, The Group of Seven, the early California Impressionist, and Japanese art, everything she sees shapes the way she looks at things, structure, color, and composition. Although some of her paintings could be considered more expressionistic or colorist, Hanson herself coined a phrase “Open Impressionism” after many people noticed that they had never seen the style like her before. Satisfied with the idea of her oil painting approach being united by traditional terminology, her technique of bending and testing the rules of traditional oil painting and searching the best capture of light and color the way she perceives them, correspond to the label “open”.

How I Make My Art Career Work by Erin Hanson
In this interview, Erin Hanson tells how she traded her plans of becoming a NASA scientist for Open Impressionist painting. Here is her story in her words:
How do you become a full-time artist?
Becoming a full-time artist was a gradual process for me. I didn’t “quit my day job” until I was already booking museum shows and had sold hundreds of pieces. I probably could have transitioned sooner, but I spent four years taking the proceeds from my art sales and putting it back into my art business: I bought supplies, a good travel van, a great show set-up, etc. The day finally came when it didn’t make sense to continue working my “job” job, and my husband helped encourage me to take the leap to creating art full-time. He pointed out that every day I wasn’t painting, I was actually losing money.
What does an average day look like for a professional artist?
I start my day by waking up at 6:30

Erin Hanson (born 1981) is an American painter known for her "Open Impressionism style of work characterized by minimal brush strokes and the impasto application of paint."[1]
Early years
[edit]Born in 1981, Hanson began painting as a child, learning oils, watercolor, pen and ink, pastels and life drawing from art instructors.[2] She began commissioning portraits of her neighbor's pets at age 10 and by age 12, she was employed after school by a mural studio, learning the techniques of acrylics on the grand scale of 40-foot canvases. Hanson has said that her first encounter with the Vincent van Gogh painting "Irises" in elementary school was decisive and marked the beginning of her appreciation for Impressionism.[3] A high school scholarship took her to Otis College of Art
