Iranian military officer (1957–2020)
Qasem Soleimani (Persian: قاسم سلیمانی, romanized: Qâsem Soleymâni; 11 March 1957[note 1] – 3 January 2020) was an Iranian military officer who served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). From 1998 until his assassination by the United States in 2020, he was the commander of the Quds Force, an IRGC division primarily responsible for extraterritorial and clandestine military operations, and played a key role in the Syrian Civil War through securing Russian intervention.[13] He was described as "the single most powerful operative in the Middle East" and a "genius of asymmetric warfare."[14][15] Former Mossad director Yossi Cohen said Soleimani's strategies had "personally tightened a noose around Israel's neck."[16]

In March, 2009, on the eve of Iranian New Year, Soleimani led a group of Iran- Iraq war veterans to the Paa-Alam Heights, a barren, rocky promontory on the Iraq border. In 1986, Paa- Alam was the scene of one of the terrible battles over the Faw Peninsula, where tens and thousands of men died while hardly advancing a step. Qasem Soleimani
Qasem Soleimani (Persian: قاسم سلیمانی; 11 March 1957 – 3 January 2020) was an Iranianmajor general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and war criminal(allegedly). From 1998 until his death in 2020, he was commander of the IRGC's Quds Force. He was born in Qanat-e Malek, Kerman. He began his military career in the 1980s Iran–Iraq War. He later helped command efforts against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in 2014–15, in which he also in the name of fighting ISIS and through Shia militias committed war crimes against Sunnis in Iraq and Syria.[1][2][3][4][5]
On 3 January 2020, Soleimani was killed in an airstrike nära Baghdad International Airport in Baghdad, Iraq. The U.S.-ordered airstrike also killed others, including Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.[6] His daughter Zeinab would make a fiery speech warning the US of the consequences of killing her father.[7]
