    Poésies is the title attributed to the poems of Arthur Rimbaud written between approx. and Les étrennes des orphelins () is the first known poem of Rimbaud.

    The only poems published during the poet's time of writing were Les Étrennes des orphelins in La revue pour tous (January 2, ), Trois baisers in La Charge (August 13, ), and Les Corbeaux in La renaissance littéraire et artistique (September 14, ). Rimbaud also sent three poems (Credo in Unam/Soleil et Chair, Ophélie and Sensation) to the poet Théodore de Banville in a letter dated May 24,

    The first collection of his poems was published under the title Le Reliquaire by Rodolphe Darzens () while Rimbaud was dying in Marseille.

    "Le bateau ivre" is probably his best known poem.

    Rimbaud is well known for being the man who said "Je est un autre" (I is another), and who then proceeded to indeed become someone else at the age of twenty-one, when he quit writing poetry, having completed A Season in Hell and Illuminations. His tempestuous relationship with Verlaine add further colour to the early part of his biography.


    According to requirements, Rimbaud has been claimed variously as prophet, angel, superman, bad boy, God, and Devil.

    My reading of Rimbaud can hardly add to such grand monikers, but I did appreciate his verse for what it is: refreshing, vivid, and moving.

    One intriguing poem is 'Seven-Year-Old Poet', which describes a rather world-wise and precocious child on his way to becoming a poet. Here is the end:

    De eerste gedichten hieruit die van Rimbaud bekend werden waren Les étrennes des orphelins (verschenen in La revue pour tous, 2 januari ), Trois baisers (in La Charge, 13 augustus ) enstaka Les Corbeaux (in La renaissance littéraire et artistique, 14 september ).

    De eerste collectie van zijn gedichten werd gepubliceerd onder de titel Le Reliquaire (Het reliekschrijn) door Rudolph Dargens (Genonceaux, ), terwijl Rimbaud stervende was in Marseille. Daarop volgde Poésies complètes, met een voorwoord van Paul Verlaine (Vanier, ). Tot de recente edities behoort Poésies complètes, uitgegeven door Pierre Brunel in Le Livre dem Poche.
