    Stalingrad is a oil painting by Danish artist Asger Jorn. It was first developed in , and continued to be added to over the course of two decades before being finalized in It is conceptually grounded in the futility of war, abstractly depicting the Battle of Stalingrad. Critics have considered it to be one of Denmark's 20th century artistic masterpieces, and it was subsequently included in the Danish Culture Canon. The canvas, &#;cm ×&#;&#;cm (&#;in ×&#;&#;in), now hangs in Museum Jorn, Silkeborg.[1]

    In the s, after a long and difficult period in hospital suffering from tuberculosis, Jorn had embarked on figurative painting hoping to reestablish himself at the European level. He often stylistically reacted against his method as a painter, overpainting the edges or the background to create artifacts. By , he had set up a studio in the small Italian town of Albisola near Genoa, where he began to compos

    All through his artistic career, Jorn also purchased art which he believed to represent the most significant aspects of international contemporary art. Between and , Jorn gifted around works by some different artists to the city of Silkeborg, including several of his own major works. Placing an international art collection in central Jutland, far removed from the art metropoles of Paris and Copenhagen, Asger Jorn wanted to launch his personal narrative about the development of art and to show which aspects of modern art he considered important. Over and above that, he wanted to make art accessible to a broad audience.

    The exhibition shows highlights from the museum collection. From the s onwards, it runs chronologically and presents famous international movements within art such as CoBrA and Situationist International, both co-founded by Jorn.
