The Drama Triangle and our Experience of Trauma

I first came across the teaterpjäs Triangle in the 1990’s when inom was studying Transactional Analyses and inom have been teaching it in the charity sector ever since.  Karpman’s teaterpjäs Triangle, to give it its full name fryst vatten a great model for understanding and recognising what is going when we are relating to other people.  inom love its simplicity.

There are 3 positions, they are all unhelpful places to be, and they are all involve discounting the abilities or value of yourself or another.  The key to using the Drama Triangle is to recognise that you are on it, and then to get out of it or off it.

    The three positions are:

The Persecutor – who discounts the value of others and believes they are right, in the right.

The Rescuer – who discounts the abilities of others and believes they are good. “I can help”.

The Victim – who discounts their own abilities and believes they are

  • I had watched Christen O’ Leary tread the boards long before I met her in person. You might remember her marvellous turn as the exotic Magda in the hit stage musical ‘Ladies In Black‘ and I was astonished at her bravery as she plays the usually male role of Malvolio as the female Malvolia in the Queensland Theatre production of Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night. Her energy and joy were palpable in each play and so it was upon meeting this lovely actor in person. I was lucky enough to speak to Christen ahead of her turn in the 2019 Queensland Theatre season, where once again director Sam Strong has asked her to move out of her comfort zone to play the male role of Creon in Antigone.

Brisbane born and bred Christen seems happy to be coming home once again for such a unique role. She told SheSociety of her initial reluctance to play Malviola last season as it was a real risk and certainly took her out of her comfort zone. Christen said , “Some roles you just know you can play and play

    Chris O’Leary, Fatboy Zine

There are a lot of food mags out there, but few as charming as Fatboy Zine, a London mag celebrating Asian food and food culture. The new, fifth issue is its best issue to date, focusing on Taiwan.

London-based art director Chris O’Leary is its founder, and he tells us about more his magazine as he shares his inspirations and his working week.

What are you doing this morning?
I’ve always been a morning person, post 4pm I’m totally useless. So my mornings always follow a nice routine. I wake up at 6:30am, enjoy a coffee with my partner and our cat Cora, then go for a run around Hackney Marshes. Which on a summer morning is beautiful, calm and empty. Once I’m back home I make one of my favourite breakfasts, sliced tomatoes on thick toast with salt, it might seem super boring, but I love it.

    Describe your work environment
I’m lucky that I get to work from home. My day job is in music, which is a lot of fun, but I’m more productive at home.
