    Gretel Lambert (born Margarethe Bergmann; April 12, 1914 – July 25, 2017) was a German Jewish track and field athlete who competed as a high jumper during the 1930s. Due to her Jewish origins, the Nazis prevented her from taking part in the 1936 Summer Olympics, after which she left Germany and vowed never to return.       This feature film dramatizes the true story of German champion high jumper Gretel Bergmann (b. 1914) and the schemes Nazi officials invented in order to exclude her from their 1936 Olympics because she was Jewish. When the United States threatened to boycott the games if Jews were not allowed to participate, the tactics became ever more bizarre. Coaches overtrained her and threatened to harm her family if she didn't go along with their plans. Central to the story is Marie Ketteler, an athlete brought in to beat Bergmann (portrayed here by Karoline Herfurth), but Ketteler, as is gradually revealed in the film, is secretly a boy.
